The New eDiscovery Laws and You

In the US, new federal rules have gone into effect concerning how electronically stored information (ESI) must be produced when legal action is initiated.  The new “eDiscovery” rules go far beyond Sarbanes-Oxley and require proactive steps be taken as part of a company's day-to-day business activities.  These steps include identifying what data (and meta-data) is stored, where and how it is stored, when and how it is destroyed, and more—all of which must be documented in corporate policies and procedures.

Attend our September meeting and learn how to expand your sphere of influence—and potentially save your company millions of dollars in legal fines for non-compliance!

Streamlining Your Document Review
and Collaboration Process

It has happened to all technical communicators. You research the content, develop the project, dot your I's and cross your T's then start your review cycle. In the end, you either do not receive feedback from your reviewers or the changes and additions are so extensive that your deadlines are compromised. During this session, we will discuss how to develop a successful collaboration process that builds quality and accuracy into your documents. The importance and benefits of a smooth document review process will be addressed. The following issues will be addressed:

• Why review cycles are necessary
• Eliminating or reducing rework
• Managing the review cycle timeline
• Handling a large review team and their contradictory feedback

What does Web 2.0 Mean for Technical Communications?
SPEAKER: Tim Bombosch, PMP

Technology often innovates faster than businesses can adapt and Web 2.0 is no exception. This new webscape's challenge to technical communicators is profound:

  • How can technical communicators maintain complete, accurate, and easy to use documentation in an environment that is constantly evolving and invites both collaboration and customization?
  • What is the evolving role of the technical communicator in this paradigm?
  • What technology and production issues do technical communicators face?

On a deeper level, the role of the technical communicator changes most dramatically because the value and role of information changes in a Web 2.0 world. Instead of an add-on expense to product development, technical communications hold all of the pieces of Web 2.0 technology together. In addition to integrating help files and PDFs into product packages or interfaces, technical communicators become deeply embedded in marketing communications, support, and e-commerce.
